Hypnobirthing is an empowering, gentle and profound experience.
You already have the perfect system of giving birth created in your body. The Western world has loaded fear and negative pre-conceptions on top of this system which prevent it from working properly. Hypnobirthing helps you release the fears and gives you the tool so that your body can give birth efficiently and comfortably in the way it is designed to do.
The combination of easy to learn methods of breathing and deep relaxation and visualisation, combined with positive thought and language, reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and fear and, as a result reduce pain. Releasing fear is fundamental to the success of Hypnobirthing.
Hypnobirthing also acknowledges the importance of the father’s role and gives him a specific role which brings the couple closer together and gives him the knowledge that he was an important part of how his baby entered the world, thus deepening his relationship with his child.
You will be given the information you need to understand how the body is working before and during the birthing experience and the choices that are available to you, so you are equipped to work with your medical advisers to achieve the birth you want, which can often be more comfortable, drug free, calm and gentle.
Why it works
Why it works
When a woman feels fear during childbirth, her body releases stress hormones that trigger the body's "fight or flight" response. This causes muscles to tighten and interferes with the birthing process. By training the subconscious mind to expect a safe, gentle birth, they say, women can avoid going into the fight-or-flight state, allowing for a smoother birth.
The subconscious mind is responsible for many of our bodily functions, and it's also the house of our belief systems and in this state of relaxation we fill the mother's mind with positive images and associations of birth, so she can call on these resources while she's giving birth. It's combining the positive powers of the mind with the natural animal body.
The mum-to-be can respond to hypnotic suggestions so well that they release "feel-good" hormones, such as endorphins and serotonin, while giving birth. These positive chemicals relaxes the mother's muscles and nervous system to the point that she feels less pain – or even no pain at all.
I used hypnotherapy CD's throughout my pregnancy. I found that it made me look forward to the experience of giving birth rather than be fearful of it, which unfortunately seems to be engrained in most women from a very young age these days. This fear results in woman not believing in their natural ability to give birth leading to complications & unnecessary intervention. Although my birth did not go to plan as my baby was breeched and I had to have an emergency c-section, I used a lot of the hypnotherapy techniques to manage my contractions beforehand, find my 'rhythm', accept the situation & still see it as a positive experience. Looking back, I think it's important to know that not only does hypnotherapy help prepare you for birth, it also keeps you calm & positive during pregnancy which I believe had a positive effect on my beautiful baby girl who is super chilled, happy & healthy. I would recommend hypnobirthing to ALL pregnant ladies & their partners.
